Consultation has concluded
Mosman Council has a proud history of great work in environmental management. Building on this long tradition of environmental stewardship, Council declared a Climate Emergency at its meeting on 12 November 2019. At the following meeting on 3 December 2019, Council resolved to prepare a Climate Strategy and Action Plan. The plan one year in the making has been developed with extensive input and knowledge sharing with the community including several workshops and a climate forum. Input was also received from the newly formed Climate Action Community Consultative Committee.
With Council in July 2020 adopting a net zero emission target for Council operations by 2030 and the aspirational net zero target for the Community by 2040, Council is ready for real action. The plan has shown that the targets are realistic and achievable. It spells out an emissions reduction pathway for Council and provides leadership, guidance and education on an emissions reduction pathway for the Community. It builds on the great efforts that are already underway and establishes clear policy direction for future programs so they can be adequately scoped, costed and adopted in line with Council's overall strategic plans.
The Climate Strategy and Action Plan lists seven action areas: Energy Use, Biodiversity and Trees, Water Cycle, Waste, Transport, Built Environment and Engaging and Educating the Community. Each of these has a list of actions / projects both current and future to meet the emissions targets highlighting cost, emissions saving, status / priority and indicator.
There is no doubt that many new initiatives and actions will be developed over time and therefore it is acknowledged that the Climate Strategy and Action Plan is a living document that will require regular updates. It is further acknowledge that renewable energy and other mitigation strategies are constantly evolving and becoming more accessible and again these will no doubt lead to further refinements of actions listed in the plan. It should be noted that a Climate Resilience and Adaptation Plan is currently being developed and is planned to work in tandem with this document to demonstrate Council’s actions in relation to climate change.
Council has resolved to place its draft Climate Strategy and Action Plan on public exhibition until 28 February 2021, and we welcome your feedback.
