Consultation has concluded

The proposed upgrade of Hunter Park playground is a MOSPLAN project scheduled for completion during 2022/2023.

The impetus for upgrades to Hunter Park comes from Council’s Asset Management Plan and Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022-26, which advocates improvements that make the community easier to live in and to get around.

The design of the purpose-built all-inclusive playground at Hunter Park was developed as the result of a successful grant application through the Everyone Can Play program administered by the NSW Department of Planning. The inclusive playground will:

‘provide a welcoming place where people feel comfortable yet challenged, and remove obstacles and barriers that prevent people of all ages, cultural backgrounds and abilities (both physical and mental) from playing.’

As such these playground upgrades differ to Council’s typical updates, a specialist consultant was appointed to engage with future user groups, review the design and provide advice on the playground. The result of which is a nature-based playground, centred around an accessible sandpit which blends into native gardens.

In addition to the playground, further improvements will be made to Hunter Park, these include:

  • Raising the canopy of existing trees (particularly the Fig trees) to improve views across to Balmoral beach;
  • A new accessible parking space located on Hunter Road;
  • Consolidate and improve access to picnic benches throughout the park; and
  • Upgrade lawns, by leveling and topdressing.

There will be no new trees planted in the park with all low-lying playground equipment only utilising approximately 10% of the current parks grassed area.

Exhibition for this project closes Monday 7 November 2022 with findings to be reported at the Council meeting on 6 December 2022. Further enquiries can be directed to Council on 9978 4000 or council@mosman.nsw.gov.au.
